Your eyes are surrounded by very thin, delicate skin. In fact your eyes area's skin can be compared to the thinness of an onion. The area beneath your eyes contain few oil glands making it vulnerable to fine lines and wrinkles. Red moles? Nope these are Cherry Angiomas. Cherry Angiomas are cherry-red to purple colored benign skin tumors of unknown origin that appear most frequently after age 40. My Experience

Fresh flowers in metal buckets, candle light, music in the background- just lovely. The food, the wine, the company... it just does not get any better. The food was provided by local farms, the talent behind the food was amazing, truly the best meal I have ever had. I will make this apart of my Summer routine from here on out. Everyone has heard of rose-scented beauty products, but only recently has rose water begun to gain popularity. It is a multi-tasking product that can be used to for a variety of purposes, such as hydrating the skin, soothing sunburns, and calming acne. Holly at Norabloom introduced me to this fascinating product, which she sells under the name Bulgarian Rose Water.

Summary:
This rose water is an excellent hydrating spray. Although I was skeptical at first, I was amazed at the effect this had on an irritated patch of skin on my arm. The angry red bumps faded within an hour and were warded off with a daily spray. I highly recommend this product for those with irritated or dry skin in need of hydration. It's hard to beat the fresh, feminine scent and cooling effect of this great multi-tasking beauty item.

Homemade Body Scrub

The best natural ingredients can be found right on your kitchen. Try this next time your skin needs a little extra attention.

2T organic brown sugar
3T organic ground oats
2T organic aloe vera gel
1T honey
1t freshly squeezed lemon juice
1t organic jojoba oil or olive oil

Monday I completed my Advanced Skin Classic Training. Tuesday I began delving into the wait list of eager clients who want to treat their minor skin irregularities. Thus far I have completed several successful treatments. I have so many pictures to share and it has only been 48 hours. OMG I am so excited... Clients are so happy with the results.

This particular picture is of a young woman in my office yesterday. She came in preparation for her wedding in late Summer. She "had" a Spider Angioma under her right eye. Literally one treatment, 5 minutes later.... Ta Daaa.... GONE! The second picture was taken right after the Advanced Skin Classic Treatment. She was left with some slight redness and a small amount of edema "swelling". This is a great time to weed out the toxic stuff and ring in the new healthier choices that all the natural skin care and makeup has to offer. Making small changes one product at a time, you gradually replace toxic brands with safer, healthier products. Throw out anything that is over 6 months old.

There is nothing more bothersome that a window with greasy finger prints. My daughter loves breathing on the windows, then drawing me a heart and her name. Cute. Here is what you can make at home, keeping it chemical free...

1/4 cup of white vinegar
1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol
1T cornstarch
2 cups of warm water

Combine in a spray bottle. Shake well. Recycle old black and white newspapers to use as an alternative to paper towels.

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF DRY BODY BRUSHING?
Dry brushing cleans the lymphatic system. Lymph is considered part of our immune system and is made of white blood cells called lymphocytes and the interstitial fluid that bathe our cells, bringing our cells nutrients and removing their waste. All detoxification occurs first and foremost through the lymph. You can do the brushing head-to-toe or toe-to-head. It really doesn’t matter as long as the entire body is brushed. Long sweeping strokes starting from the bottom of your feet upwards, and from the hands towards the shoulders, and on the torso in an upward direction help drain the lymph back to your heart. Note: Stroking away from your heart puts extra pressure on the valves within the veins and lymph vessels and can cause ruptured vessels and varicose veins. Use light pressure in areas where the skin is thin and harder pressure on places like the soles of the feet.

Skin brushing should be performed once a day, preferably first thing in the morning. A thorough skin brushing takes about 15 minutes, but any time spent brushing prior to bathing will benefit the body. If you are feeling ill, increasing the treatments to twice a day is good. 7 Ways to De-Stress

It has been brought to my attention (in a very personal way) that stress can and will pile up if you allow it to. Once that happens, it can reek havoc on your health. We hear about stress, we feel stressed at times, we sense stress. But for me it always seemed to be apart of life-you just accept it. Well, on my journey of figuring all of this out, I made a list. This is my list of simple FREE things to do when life overwhelms me. I thought I would share.

1. Wake up ten minutes early each day. Use this extra ten minutes to relax, move slower than usual.

2. Take a deep breath.

3. Trade five minute massages with someone in your home. Kids love this, so do husbands :) It reminds you where your body is tensing up and brings you back into the center of your body where you can be more grounded. It also reminds you of the value of human touch which can improve your relationships in a subtle way and reduce the stress in the air around you.

4. Take a walk. Getting outside and getting moving are both great ways to clear your head.

5. Write out the positive. Whenever you feel yourself getting too stressed, grab a journal and a pen and head somewhere quiet. create a list of the positive things that are going on in your life or a list of things that you are grateful for. Re-focusing on the positive for ten minutes by yourself can bring you back to a happier place and reduce the feeling of stress in your life.

6. Immerse yourself in a scent that you love. We can drastically change our moods with the right scents. Learn a little bit about aromatherapy and figure out how to take a few minutes out of each day to bring yourself back to a calmer place using the right oils or perfumes. For me it is Lavender and Peppermint Essential Oils.

7. Make sure to take at least ten minutes of your lunch hour just to eat. Most people, like myself multi-task during their lunch hours. Mindful eating of healthy foods for just ten minutes can really brighten your day.

I thought I could think of 10, but now I am in the mood for a walk, so I am stopping at 7.

I have always adored lemons :) It is routine for me to have a lemon in my water with meals. When I head home (down South) I can't wait to have sweet iced tea with yes... lemon! Lemon juice is the key to lightening age spots and freckles. Its powerful acid action really does the trick.

1. To exfoliate dead skin and diminish the appearance of freckles and age spots, cut a lemon in half, dip the juicy side into 1/2 teaspoon sugar granules (raw sugar works great too). Rub over the skin (problem area) for a few minutes. Repeat at least once a week until the darkened areas fade.

2. Or–simply sit with a slice of lemon applied directly to the area for ten minutes. Repeat once a week until spots fade.

The Tomato Knob

My daughter and faithful side kick Maddy came up with this fabulous idea :)
Cut a large tomato in half. (This is perfect for a mommy-daughter facial evening, you will have 2 knobs out of one tomato) Dip the juicy part of the tomato in natural cane sugar. Grasp the un-sugared portion, "the knob" of the tomato. Gently use this sugared tomato to scrub and buff away any makeup residue or dry, flaky skin. Rinse your face with warm water. Discard your tomato knob. Lastly, apply a few drops of extra virgin olive oil as a moisturizer. Your skin will be silky soft and supple. Enjoy :)

Devilish Free-Radicals

Bright Eyes

Your eyes are surrounded by very thin, delicate skin. In fact your eyes area's skin can be compared to the thinness of
an onion. The area beneath your eyes contain few oil glands making it vulnerable to fine lines and wrinkles. Wrinkles can't be prevented but the aging process can be slowed down and enhanced with natural ingredients. Definitely shop for paraben-free and fragrance-free eye cremes and serums. Avoid exfoliating to close to your eyes.

Your eyes actually can say a lot about you. Your eyes can show stress, poor diet, and lack of sleep. When these issues are present the eyes may show dark circles, swelling and puffiness. Dark circles can be a sign of dehydration. Be sure to drink plenty of water. Try drinking cranberry juice to reduce dark circles. Cranberries contain vitamin K as well as dark green veggies. Do not fret, I have some fabulous tips that will unlock your natural glow and ease the transition into Spring.

1. Choose a facial cleanser that is gentle and free of harsh chemicals. Make sure you choose one appropriate for your skin type. If you have Dry/Sensitive skin, choose a creme based facial cleanser. Cleansers that contain rose, calendula and aloe are healing and help lock in moisture. If you are Oily/Combination skin type, choose a foaming gel cleanser with ingredients such as, chamomile, rosemary, salcylic acid and/or lactic acid. I believe it is important that you cleanse your facial skin two times a day, especially at night to remove dirt, oil and makeup prior to bedtime. Avoid cheap bar soaps for your facial cleansing. The bar soap's PH is wrong for out delicate facial area.

2. Good food choices also make a difference in the skin. Cleanse and hydrate your inner body and your skin will show it. Eat vegetables with a high water content and juicy fruits. Choose light foods. Avoid rich sweets, deep fried foods and heavy cheese. Enjoy plenty of farm fresh veggies, asparagus, baby greens, carrots, etc. Always drink lots of pure water instead of sodas and artificial juice drinks.

3. Exfoliate both the face and the body. Dry/Sensitive skin types should exfoliate the facial skin once a week, while Oily/Combination skin types can exfoliate more often such as 2-4x a week. Again choosing the right ingredients is key. Ingredients such as oatmeal and jojoba beads tend to be more gentle. More aggressive ingredients for the body are coarse sea salt, crushed nuts, apricots, and sugars. For some, this may be the most important step in easing the seasonal transition. Exfoliating properly will speed up your natural, cellular turnover. By speeding this up, your skin will look cleaner, refreshed and even younger. This will also help with clogged pores and breakouts.

4. Hydrate your face and your body daily. Be more choosy when it comes to your face creme. All skin types should lock in your natural moisture by using a combination of chemical free ingredients such as aloe, calendula, rose, rosehip seed oil and jojoba oil. As far as tackling our body's dry skin, use a heavy body butter or body oil morning and before bed. You will immediately see a difference.

5. Protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. It is imperative that you plan sunscreen into your beauty routine. The key to sunscreen is to reapply every 2-3 hours. Try using a makeup product that contains sunscreen for daily protection instead of a face creme or lotion. Most of us are more likely to reapply our loose powder that contains SPF 20+ rather than a heavy lotion or face creme.

6. Special skin care treatments administered by a Licensed Esthetician (facialist) will make a dramatic difference in your overall skin's health and appearance. Look for advice from a professional when you find yourself between seasons and are seeking a new beauty routine.

Beauty Rituals?

Why a beauty ritual? Is it the evening cleanse to remove the filth from your face? Is it the sure fire way to have 6 minutes of alone time while locked in your bathroom away from your lovely yet demanding family? Honestly, for me? All the above! It is not bedtime until my beauty ritual is complete. It is my "heaven of earth" it is my 6 minutes of uninterrupted "Holly time", it is the least I can do for myself, preservation of my youth and because I know it works. I recently visited Ariana Blossom, LMT at Bodyworks in Ithaca, NY, for a modified Thai Massage Therapy session. I have had the pleasure of experiencing Ariana's deep tissue work in the past several times. The sessions have always been divine. This time was especially unique and special.

When I entered her office I was not in my best condition. I had a headache beginning on my left temple, I was gasping for air, just a plain mess. Not one of my better days. :)She could tell I was not myself. Between my stress and feeling over-worked, her wheels began to turn about what I needed for the hour.

We began our session with a guided meditation, this was new for me in this way. This extra step balanced my breath and my headache began to ease. The session began like a regular massage session, she began to blend in Thai massage techniques, it was truly just what my body and mind needed.

I can best explain Thai Massage as an ancient ayurvedic healing art. Through application of pressure on energy lines and points, and a vast array of passive stretching movements performed with the hands, feet, knees and elbow's, the body experiences profound relaxation, peripheral stimulation of internal organs, increased flexibility and increased flow of energy. Honestly it offered me pure body bliss.

I left the session with a peaceful mind, relaxed body and refreshed soul. I made sure to book another at the end of the month.

WOW! Yesterday I had the pleasure of coloring my hair at TRANSFORMATIONS SALON in Ithaca, New York. I had the best shampoo treatment that I have ever had! Abby George, a young, sweet, hip stylist began with a color treatment. One color, simple. Exactly what I wanted. I relaxed under a warm dryer, while catching up on fab girly magazines! :) 20 minutes later I was escorted to the fantastic shampoo area. The world is full of products that come from petroleum. For example, gasoline, styrofoam, lubricating oils, and many other items are all derivatives of this raw material. How are petroleum and cosmetics related? The two seemingly unrelated items, petroleum and cosmetics, are indeed closely related in our world.

Mineral oil and petroleum are the basic ingredients in many cosmetic products today. Both mineral oil and petroleum have the same origins in fossils fuels. Cosmetics such as foundations, cleansers, and moisturizers often contain mineral oil. By locking moisture against the skin, mineral oil sits on the skin’s surface and can potentially block pores. This may cause the appearance of pimples because the skin cannot properly ‘breathe’.

If there is one thing in this world that a girl must have, it is a PINK LIST. The PINK LIST is a list for girls' eyes only. It is a list of things you must do in this lifetime. Most are realistic, some fantasy. How many times do we day dream and say "ONE DAY when I have more time, I really want to...". Well girls there is no time like the present.

Wake up Ya Yas, today is the day to create abundance and live that life you want. So many of us have natural tendencies to care and nurture others before we consider our needs. We can not operate when our LOVE TANK is empty and we feel uninspired.

I now have 328 things on my PINK LIST. Some as simple as take a spin class at the gym, go to an oxygen bar with my girlfriends or go to a ball and be Cinderella for an evening or simply to get a pass port.

For years, parabens have been considered a cheap and indispensable way to inhibit the growth of bacteria, yeasts and molds in personal-care products such as shampoos, conditioners, deodorants and sunscreens. Parabens are why products can survive the three-month boat trip from China, sit on store or warehouse shelves for years or be exposed to extreme temperatures.
But studies have shown that some parabens can mimic the activity of the hormone estrogen in the body's cells. Estrogenic activity in the body is associated with certain forms of breast cancer. And parabens are turning up in breast tumors.

Dark Spots: Melasma

Melasma, also known as pregnancy mask, or hyperpigmentation, is an extremely common issue for women. An increased level of the hormone estrogen, either caused by pregnancy, a change in hormone levels, or birth control pills, can cause dark patches on the face. Melasma and sun spots are sometimes hard to tell apart, but Melasma generally appears as patches around the mouth, on the apples of the cheeks, on the forehead and around the jawline. Sun spots, or sun damage are generally spots of darker pigment, or large freckles. I personally have a hard time telling the two apart visually.

How to prevent Melasma:
If your estrogen rises, due to pregnancy or taking the pill, there’s a good chance you could develop Melasma. The single best way to prevent it is by staying out of the sun (and tanning booths) completely. The second best way is to wear a good sunscreen at all times - even if you leave the house for only 5 minutes to run an errand. Zinc Oxide based sunscreens are the absolute best for protecting your skin from the sun. Make sure to reapply if you are outdoors for more than a few hours, and reapply after swimming or sweating. Unfortunately, Melasma can happen quickly, and just one day of sun exposure without a good sunscreen can cause it. Once you get Melasma, it’s difficult to get rid of, at least quickly, so protection is by far your most important measure.

How to get rid of Melasma:
If you are pregnant, you don’t want to be doing professional skin care treatments, or using most prescription skin products, nor do you want to use a product with Hydroquinone as an active ingredient. Luckily Zinc Oxide is safe to use while pregnant.

Hydroquinone, a skin lightener, is the most common used ingredient for Melasma, and sun spots. It has elicited some controversy, because a lot of people claim it can be hazardous. Ironically, it can make you more sun-sensitive, so if you are not staying out of the sun, you can make your Melasma worse! I am not sure what to believe about the safety of Hydroquinone, but a lot of reputable skin care companies still use the ingredient. Glycolic Acid, and Tretinoin, or Retinol are also used by themselves, or in combination, to treat Melasma. Kojic acid, Azelaic acid, Licorice extract, Salicylic acid and Vitamin C are also ingredients that can possibly lighten your dark patches.

I have worked in a physicians office in the past and Obaji Nu Derm Skin Care and Photo Facials (Laser) in my opinion did not show great results if any.

The Power of an At Home Facial

Funny how people with even the most sunny, positive outlook, can still have rainy days or a rainy week. My week started off pretty good, then.... the brakes in my car started grinding, the furnace blows out, a pipe in my basements explodes, my clothing drier just wont dry, my car need tires and everyone decides to bill out. (All in one week!) EEK! My daughter decides that this week is also "I hate you mom week", and if that wasn't bad enough, my hair just would not curl right. So like any other "beauty obsessed junkie" would do, I decide it's time for a new face! The first thing that turns my frown upside down, is some good ole pampering. I do my nightly routine which is tidy up my house, tuck my daughter into bed, take the poochies out for a nighttime tinkle, kiss the husband, lock up and then................ Yes I do it... an AT HOME FACIAL. I lock the bathroom door and line up my products one by one. I cleanse with my blossom chamomile cleanser, I leave it on while I brush my teeth. I exfoliate with the blossom green tea citrus scrub (scrubbing aggressively, trying to remove the stress off my face, then I apply my blossom pumpkin peel masque. It has to sit on the skin for 10 minutes so I lay out a towel in the middle of my tiny bathroom and practice breathing in and out (aiming for my stress to let go and disappear). I then rinse the scrumptious pumpkin peel masque off then to continue with my blossom dandelion face creme, evening primrose eye creme. I look in the mirror and who do I see? I see myself staring back at me, smiling with smooth skin and a glow to die for. I look less stressed. I am ready for a new sunny week! Girls this proves that if we take a little time for ourselves, even the worst week can end with a glow.
