Lemon Juice for Brown Spots

I have always adored lemons :) It is routine for me to have a lemon in my water with meals. When I head home (down South) I can't wait to have sweet iced tea with yes... lemon! I love natural cleaning products that contain lemon. Lots and lots of lovely little lemons. What is not to love about lemons? Now I am using lemons in my beauty routine.

Lemon juice is the key to lightening age spots and freckles. Its powerful acid action really does the trick.

1. To exfoliate dead skin and diminish the appearance of freckles and age spots, cut a lemon in half, dip the juicy side into 1/2 teaspoon sugar granules (raw sugar works great too). Rub over the skin (problem area) for a few minutes. Repeat at least once a week until the darkened areas fade.

2. Or–simply sit with a slice of lemon applied directly to the area for ten minutes. Repeat once a week until spots fade.

Let me know how this works for you...

7 ways to enjoy a Green Christmas

1. Scrap traditional wrap: Use kids artwork or beautiful scrap fabrics. Consider saving this years holiday cards for next years gift wrap or gift tags.

2. Shop Local: Neighborhood shops offer unique and special gifts. Keep your local economy thriving.

3. Put a twinkle in your tree: Use LED Lights: Energy-saving LED lights burn brighter, last longer, and save you money. They even make solar outdoor holiday lights.

4. Green Greetings: Send E- Holiday Cards vs wasting paper and stamps with traditional paper cards.

5. Give Back: Give a gift that makes a difference—changing a life or saving a life. Donate to a local or favorite charity in a friend’s name.

6. While planning your gift list, think of educating your friends and family. Introduce your loved ones to natural organic gifts (natural skin care, makeup, local organic jams and soy candles)

7. Once holiday is over, re-purpose your Christmas tree into mulch for hiking trails and paths. The experts suggest that Christmas trees can also be used for erosion control and soil stabilization.

Happy Holidays!

New: Eco-Tools Bamboo Bristle Body Brush

My new favorite, must have for the shower... The new bath brush from Eco-Tools, now available on line at and in our beauty lounge, $8.50. BUY NOW

Handle is made from bamboo, a highly-sustainable plant. Synthetic nylon bristles are 100% cruelty-free.

Wet brush and apply favorite soap or body wash to gently scrub hard-to-reach areas. Rinse and hang to dry.

Dry brushing cleans the lymphatic system. Lymph is considered part of our immune system and is made of white blood cells called lymphocytes and the interstitial fluid that bathe our cells, bringing our cells nutrients and removing their waste. All detoxification occurs first and foremost through the lymph. You can do the brushing head-to-toe or toe-to-head. It really doesn’t matter as long as the entire body is brushed. Long sweeping strokes starting from the bottom of your feet upwards, and from the hands towards the shoulders, and on the torso in an upward direction help drain the lymph back to your heart. Note: Stroking away from your heart puts extra pressure on the valves within the veins and lymph vessels and can cause ruptured vessels and varicose veins. Use light pressure in areas where the skin is thin and harder pressure on places like the soles of the feet.

Skin brushing should be performed once a day, preferably first thing in the morning. A thorough skin brushing takes about 15 minutes, but any time spent brushing prior to bathing will benefit the body. If you are feeling ill, increasing the treatments to twice a day is good. Complete this routine with a nice, warm shower. Pat the skin dry with a soft towel, and generously coat the skin with Norabloom Organic Jojoba Body Blend (clary sage or lime)

New: Ultrasonic Facial Wand

There is a new addition to our Signature Facial Level 3 & 4...
Introducing the Ultrasonic Wand. This complimentary addition will offer gentle peeling with little to no redness. The ultrasonic vibrations provide ablation and retexturing of the skin. I combine this with the Norabloom Fruit Peels and the Dermafile and the results are exciting. The foundation of these facials continue to be holistic, but now we add an extra step to give it even more WOW power. The best part is it also has a micro massage setting for lifting, no this is not a TRICK, rather a TREAT... Lifting. Can you say... where do I sign up? The ultrasonic vibration runs 28,000 cycles per second. In this setting, it will heat the skin tissue to stimulate blood flow, strengthen tissue metabolism, resulting in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. Plus it feels awesome! Did I mention you can also set it to assist in pore extraction? Yep, sure does. Like I said, no tricks here t his October, just a new TREATment.

SPECIAL: Enjoy $20 off a facial of your choice between now and October 29, 2010.

The Tomato Knob

My daughter and faithful side kick Maddy came up with this fabulous idea :)
Cut a large tomato in half. (This is perfect for a mommy-daughter facial evening, you will have 2 knobs out of one tomato) Dip the juicy part of the tomato in natural cane sugar. Grasp the un-sugared portion, "the knob" of the tomato. Gently use this sugared tomato to scrub and buff away any makeup residue or dry, flaky skin. Rinse your face with warm water. Discard your tomato knob. Lastly, apply a few drops of extra virgin olive oil as a moisturizer. Your skin will be silky soft and supple. Enjoy :)

Devilish Free-Radicals

Free radicals are highly unstable oxygen molecules missing a single electron form their outer orbit. Since these little guys prefer traveling in pairs, they steal electrons from healthy cells, wounding those cells and setting off an inflammatory response. These little devils aka "free radicals" surround us internally and externally. They are formed on the skin within five minutes of unprotected sun exposure and reek havoc on our skin, specifically the collagen layer of the skin.

External factors include: pollution, sun, x rays, chemicals and toxins in lotions and cosmetics. (GREAT TIME TO START USING NORABLOOM):)

Internal factors include: smoking, hormonal imbalance, poor diet, high glycemic foods, undiagnosed food sensitivities, artificial sweeteners, and trans fats.

To make significant improvements in the tone and texture of your skin, you need to soothe inflammation on 2 levels:

1. by neutralizing free radicals (inside and outside)
2. boosting immune function through fantastic nutrition, supplements, hormonal balance, detoxification and topical support.

To counteract the devilish free-radicals, our immune system relies on certian nutrient that defend the cells from free radicals. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals and quench minor inflammation by sacrificing an electron without the adverse effect.

Antioxidents include:
Vitamin C
Vitamin E
CO Enzyme Q-10
Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Is Our Skin Water Tight?

The answer is... (drum roll)...
Heck no! Human skin is a powerful absorption organ that is as hungry and as thirsty as can be. Every drop of water, every swipe of face creme, every lick of lipstick... Our skin takes it in. Our skin absorbs 60% of substances applied to its surface. Unfortunately, along with water, vitamins, minerals and oxygen, skin soaks up potentially carcinogenic toxins as well. That may increase our chances of cancer, as if our environmental toxins were not enough.Be cautious and choose your shampoos, facial cleanser, moisturizes and makeup wisely.

Ithaca Dermatology

I am happy to announce that on Wednesdays I will be apart of the staff at Ithaca Dermatology. They offer many different type of laser treamtents:

Is a pulsed dye laser that delivers an intense but gentle burst of light into targeted areas. The light is absorbed by specific blood vessels or pigmented areas (melanin) in the dermis depending on the condition being treated. The skin being treated is protected by a cooling mist on the skin before the laser pulse is emitted. It increases comfort during the treatment. No anesthetic is required, but can be used. Results differ depending on the condition being treated & the number of treatments needed.

Treats: Brown pigmentation, Rosacea, Wrinkles, Angiomas, Poikiloderma, Facial & Leg Veins, Port Wine Stains, Warts, Scars & Stretchmarks

This laser creates a beam of high-intensity light that penetrates deeply into the skin tissue, where it delivers a controlled amount of targeted therapeutic heat. The skin is protected by a cooling burst of cryogen. Some may feel a slight discomfort with each laser pulse, sometimes described like the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. Topical anesthetic may be used prior to treatment. The number of sessions depends on the target and the condition of your skin. Any redness or swelling should resolve within a few hours.

Treats: Hair Removal (only dark hair), Leg & Facial Veins, Wrinkles, Skin Tightening & Beard Bumps

Uses a unique combination of vacuum & painless laser for clear, radiant skin free from acne, red & brown spots, sun damage & unwanted hair. Shows visible reduction in pore size, improved skin tone & texture. Once your treatment is complete, you are free to resume your normal activities & you can apply makeup immediately. Treats: All skin types.

Vacuum: Helps loosen & extract dirt, blackheads & excess oil from deep within the pores.

Painless Laser: Helps destroy acne-causing bacteria, even skin tone, improves sun damaged skin, facial redness, veins & unwanted hair.

Treats: Acne, Hair Removal (only dark hair) & Skin Rejuvenation

This laser emits a light that is absorbed by water in your skin. As the laser penetrates into the skin, heat is generated in & around the sebaceous glands (oil glands) creating a mild thermal injury that changes the structure & function of the gland. Most report it to be mild with a slight snapping or stinging sensation like a rubberband. A cool mist is sprayed with each pulse. A topical anesthetic can be used. Mild redness may be seen and will subside within a day. Helps to renew skin by stimulating the generation of new collagen formation of the skin.

Treats: Acne, Acne Scarring & Wrinkles

Bright Eyes

Your eyes are surrounded by very thin, delicate skin. In fact your eyes area's skin can be compared to the thinness of
an onion. The area beneath your eyes contain few oil glands making it vulnerable to fine lines and wrinkles. Wrinkles can't be prevented but the aging process can be slowed down and enhanced with natural ingredients. Definitely shop for paraben-free and fragrance-free eye cremes and serums. Avoid exfoliating to close to your eyes.

Your eyes actually can say a lot about you. Your eyes can show stress, poor diet, and lack of sleep. When these issues are present the eyes may show dark circles, swelling and puffiness. Dark circles can be a sign of dehydration. Be sure to drink plenty of water. Try drinking cranberry juice to reduce dark circles. Cranberries contain vitamin K as well as dark green veggies. If you are experiencing swelling and puffiness, use spoons chilled in ice water and press them around the eyes. For a quick home remedy try a few drops of Vitamin E, Castor Oil or Olive Oil around the eye area.

Prepare Your Skin For SPRING

I am sure your spirit is singing the praises of Spring, but it is likely that your skin is still crying the Winter blues. Winter leaves our skin feeling rough, overheated, undernourished and parched. Do not fret, I have some fabulous tips that will unlock your natural glow and ease the transition into Spring.

1. Choose a facial cleanser that is gentle and free of harsh chemicals. Make sure you choose one appropriate for your skin type. If you have Dry/Sensitive skin, choose a creme based facial cleanser. Cleansers that contain rose, calendula and aloe are healing and help lock in moisture. If you are Oily/Combination skin type, choose a foaming gel cleanser with ingredients such as, chamomile, rosemary, salcylic acid and/or lactic acid. I believe it is important that you cleanse your facial skin two times a day, especially at night to remove dirt, oil and makeup prior to bedtime. Avoid cheap bar soaps for your facial cleansing. The bar soap's PH is wrong for out delicate facial area.

2. Good food choices also make a difference in the skin. Cleanse and hydrate your inner body and your skin will show it. Eat vegetables with a high water content and juicy fruits. Choose light foods. Avoid rich sweets, deep fried foods and heavy cheese. Enjoy plenty of farm fresh veggies, asparagus, baby greens, carrots, etc. Always drink lots of pure water instead of sodas and artificial juice drinks.

3. Exfoliate both the face and the body. Dry/Sensitive skin types should exfoliate the facial skin once a week, while Oily/Combination skin types can exfoliate more often such as 2-4x a week. Again choosing the right ingredients is key. Ingredients such as oatmeal and jojoba beads tend to be more gentle. More aggressive ingredients for the body are coarse sea salt, crushed nuts, apricots, and sugars. For some, this may be the most important step in easing the seasonal transition. Exfoliating properly will speed up your natural, cellular turnover. By speeding this up, your skin will look cleaner, refreshed and even younger. This will also help with clogged pores and breakouts.

4. Hydrate your face and your body daily. Be more choosy when it comes to your face creme. All skin types should lock in your natural moisture by using a combination of chemical free ingredients such as aloe, calendula, rose, rosehip seed oil and jojoba oil. As far as tackling our body's dry skin, use a heavy body butter or body oil morning and before bed. You will immediately see a difference.

5. Protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. It is imperative that you plan sunscreen into your beauty routine. The key to sunscreen is to reapply every 2-3 hours. Try using a makeup product that contains sunscreen for daily protection instead of a face creme or lotion. Most of us are more likely to reapply our loose powder that contains SPF 20+ rather than a heavy lotion or face creme.

6. Special skin care treatments administered by a Licensed Esthetician (facialist) will make a dramatic difference in your overall skin's health and appearance. Look for advice from a professional when you find yourself between seasons and are seeking a new beauty routine.

Beauty Rituals?

Why a beauty ritual? Is it the evening cleanse to remove the filth from your face? Is it the sure fire way to have 6 minutes of alone time while locked in your bathroom away from your lovely yet demanding family? Is it fear that if you do not have one, you may end up looking like a shriveled up old hag? Or, do we just do it because our facialist and our beauty magazines say so?

Honestly, for me? All the above! It is not bedtime until my beauty ritual is complete. It is my "heaven of earth" it is my 6 minutes of uninterrupted "Holly time", it is the least I can do for myself, preservation of my youth and because I know it works. My beauty ritual is my private 6 minute spa get-a-way, my second piece of cheesecake without guilt. It is the whole bag of Lyndt Chocolate Peanut Butter Truffles.

It is simple and divine. I cleanse and exfoliate.(Norabloom of course)I spend a couple minutes really massaging the products all around. This is great for circulation, smoothing the skin and battling clogged pores. It gives me the second to breathe deep and take it all in. I encourage all women, even teen girls to take a second, look in the mirror, give themselves a wink and say. "hey pretty lady, all is well, today was a good day, even the bumps in the day". Now with a refreshed face, a spritz of yummy toner, a swipe of moisturizer and eye creme- off to bed. Tomorrow is a brand new day and I will have a fresh face for the world.

It is silly how simple a little beauty ritual, fresh face and a good attitude and a moment of quit time can make all the difference.

PS Can y'all believe some women actually skip the beauty ritual at night? What the heck?

Need a lift?

Every gal needs a lift from time to time.

During the aging process, fibroblasts activity decreases, affecting skin strength and elasticity. The dermal degradation is observed as fine line, wrinkles, and skin lacking in tone.

Meanwhile there is a decrease in blood flow and the oxygenation to the skin and the growth of new skin cells drops dramatically. The skin looses its ability to spring back and maintain a youthful appearance. Microdermabrasion is a type of facial where we use a machine in combination with European Facial Techniques.

The microderm machine offers a 2 element approach. Combining skin exfoliation with regenerating suction, this unique system stimulates subdermal activities the "RENEW" the anti-aging mechanisms of the skin that slow with age. It removes 10-100 microns of skin. :)

Microdermabrasion is the fastest growing application for skin resurfacing technology. As a non-invasive technique, it respects the skin's integrity, minimizes trauma and corrects several skin conditions while creating "healthy vital glow".

Enjoy Norabloom's Microdermabrasion Treatment, $125 or 5 for $500
